PABJ remembers Edie Huggins

The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists salutes and remembers the legacy of pioneering journalist Edie Huggins.

Edie has meant so much to so many during four decades in television news. As one of the first African American women to appear on TV newscasts in Philadelphia, Edie paved the way for countless journalists of color to excel and be journalistic vehicles for inclusive coverage of overlooked and misunderstood communities.
In 2005, PABJ honored Edie as an industry trailblazer.

Armed with a pen, a microphone and driven by heart, Edie skillfully told stories with unparalleled class and commitment… stories of people, politicians and problems that needed attention. Edie had a way of championing the powerless in her reports, digging deep to uncover an inner strength and ability to overcome tragedy or seemingly insurmountable barriers. Clearly, she was dedicated to giving voice to the voiceless.
Last month, Edie received the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists award for her service to the community and PABJ.
Over the years, Edie Huggins has represented what we strive to do, demonstrate a commitment to our craft and fulfill an obligation to help others. We celebrate her life and legacy and mourn her loss.
To her family, we offer our gratitude and our heartfelt condolences.

Chapter of the Year

Congratulations members:

I am proud to announce that the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists has won the Chapter of the Year award from NABJ! PABJ got the nod this afternoon during the Unity convention in Chicago, beating out chapters from that host city and Nashville. This is a great accomplishment for all of us who work hard for the organization. 2007 was an incredibly challenging year for us professionally for our industry, but PABJ managed to persevere accomplishing professional and community workshops, acts of advocacy and student mentorship and scholarship. I'm so glad NABJ recognized our hard work! And I want to send a special shout out to Sarah Glover, Vice-President, Print for leading the application submission. She was there along with Acting Treasurer/Parliamentarian Melanie Burney and Vice-President, Broadcast Denise James to accept the award in my absence along with several of our members. Congratulations again! And tell your friends/colleagues, if you're not a member of PABJ, NOW see why you should be!

PABJ remembers Mal Johnson

PABJ is mourning, and remembering the proud spirit, ingenuity, and legacy of Mal Johnson, who passed away last month at the age of 85. Mal was one of the original founders of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists, and like many of her group, later help to found the National Association of Black Journalists. Although Mal worked and lived in Washington D.C. during her later years, many of our members will have memories of her from our 2006 Banquet from our 2006 Banquet, where she received a PABJ Trailblazer Award.

PABJ President Monique Oliver shared her memories upon learning of her passing. "Mal was a wonderful person and a 2006 PABJ Trailblazer. She taught me a few things about broadcasting while I talked with her in preparation for the 2006 banquet. I am glad to have known her." Her feelings were shared by PABJ Parliamentarian Melanie Burney, "I'm so glad that we honored her when we did. I wish I had spent more time with her.". I'm sure many of PABJ's membership feels the same. As Monique and Melanie already have, please share your memories of Mal by leaving a personal message or memory about Mal in the comments section.

We'll share some of the best of these at November's meeting.

By overwhelming vote, PABJ's Deidre Childress was elected NABJ Secretary, replacing outgoing NABJ Secretary/PABJ Member Sarah Glover. The vote was said to be 333 to 236. Share your good wishes & ideas with Deidre at dchildress@phillynews.com

Also, PABJ Member and Mt. Laurel, NJ resident Caleb Wilkerson was formally installed as NABJ Region 1 Director at this year's convention.

TABJ student Renita Burns served as web reporter for the NABJ Student Online Project. PABJ VP Denise James served as a mentor of the student NABJ news broadcasts, Member Sia Nyorkor produced the "good-bye" video package for outgoing NABJ President Bryan Monroe, PABJ Secretary Manny Smith & Member Pharoah Cranston co-produced three NABJ plenary sessions including the candidate forums with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Philadelphia native & longtime WRC-TV anchor Jim Vance inducted into the NABJ Hall of Fame.

Wednesday Wrap-Up

In the convention program book, the first day of programming is noted as "Chapter Day" or by the "Super Workshops", but NABJ veterans know that first days are more for re-connecting and renewing friendships with old friends and colleagues, and making new plans to hang out with them for the week, promises to keep in touch, and for some, planting new seeds of romance.

There's never enough attention placed on those behind-the-scenes folks who plan the events and keep the convention going. This year, many of them are PABJ Members like Sarah Glover and Melanie Burney, outgoing NABJ Board members keeping the "ship" steered in the right direction. Denise James is one of the student project leaders again this year, Sia Nyorkor is producing a video package for one of the award events, and Pharoah Cranston and I are co-producing the Imus and Obama events, along with producing some online elements for both.

Unfortunately, that means an early bedtime for me, but for YOU it means behind the scenes access from the Hillary Session and Opening Ceremony, and a peek at the Career Fair. See you then. Don't forget to leave your coverage comments in the section below!

Media Access Workshop 2007

Nearly 75 community members & journalists converged on the Philadelphia Daily News/Inquirer building this past May for our annual Media Access Workshop. Here are some memories of the day as shared by PABJ VP Print Sarah Glover:

Welcome Mark D. Frisby as the new publisher of the Philadelphia Daily News.
Mark is no stranger to the Daily News Staff, as he already has a place in the papers' building at 400 N. Broad Street. Soon after Brian Tierney and a consortium of local owners purchased the newspapers, Mark was hired from NJ's Courier-Post as Executive Vice President of production, labor, & purchasing. Frisby will retain his EVP title as he adds his new Daily News responsibilites.

Speaking to Daily News reporter Catherine Lucey, Frisby said "I think there probably wasn't much focus on the newspaper over the past decade," but added; "I'm looking forward to helping grow this piece of the business,"

PABJ fights Breast Cancer

Near and dear to the hearts of many journalists...are our Mothers. Next to them, the female journalists in our lives.

PABJ joined thousands of Delaware Valley residents who lined Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Mother's Day for the Susan B. Komen Race for the cure. This year, PABJ walked for a special reason. We proudly and humbly walked in honor of our friend and colleague ... Sandra Dawson Long .... A SURVIVOR!

Sandra, a Deputy Managing Editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer is a founding member of both PABJ & NABJ. She chronicled her battle with breast cancer on a philly.com blog. PABJ felt the best way to support Sandra through her battle would be to organize a team for the Komen walk. PABJ & NABJ Parliamentarian Melanie Burney took the charge, organizing the team, and raising over $1,300 dollars for the cause.

PABJ Member Deidre Childress seeks National NABJ Post

Good Day Friends:

I am sending this note to let everyone know I am now an officially certified candidate for Secretary of the National Association of Black Journalists, 2007-2009.

As journalists of color, many of us are at a crossroads in our career because this is a difficult time for our ever-changing industry and in our lives. But I am seeking this office filled with hope and a strong desire to strengthen our profession.

I’m a longtime member of NABJ who has been active at the chapter level and on behalf of many past presidents. I owe almost every job on my resume to a job fair offered by NABJ or one of its affiliates, such as the Black Journalists of Southern California which helped me earn jobs at United Press International and The Washington Post. I am among the organizers of WABJ’s 20th Anniversary Celebration and NABJ’s 25th Anniversary Gala here in Philadelphia, having served on the boards of both chapters.

Currently, I mentor journalism students from Temple University and high school students through NABJ Founder Acel Moore’s career workshop. I am on the PABJ Banquet of Honors committee for this year’s dinner on June 9.

After years of working with chapters in Los Angeles, Washington and Philadelphia, I have decided to make a two-year commitment to our national organization to add fresh views to its leadership and to bring the innovative ideas that have been my hallmark.

By May, I will launch a website with more information about issues concerning NABJ, problems affecting the retention of veteran black journalists, and our need for innovative training in multi-media. You will find my vision for NABJ on this site and in future communications.

Several people have asked me how they can help. Below are a few ideas:

• Join or renew your membership in NABJ before July 1.

• Vote online beginning June 8 or by mail-in ballot by July 13.

• Plan to attend the 32nd Annual Convention and Career Fair from Aug. 8-12 in Las Vegas, "Revolutionizing Journalism, Transforming the Future." A discounted registration rate is available until July 1. Bally’s room rate is $104 per night for members. (Go to www.nabj.org)

Media Access Workshop

The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists
(PABJ), along with the Philadelphia Black Public
Relations Society (PBPRS), will host its annual Media
Access Workshop on Saturday, May 5 from 8:00 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Inquirer Public Room,
400 North Broad Street. PABJ will provide free media
access training to non-profits with the goal of
breaking down the barriers these organizations may
face in gaining access to the media. The program will
include 5 courses led by area media professionals from
newspapers, ethnic press, broadcast (tv/radio), public
relations and the online journalism community. Area
non-profits are invited to attend this free event. If

Friday, April 6, is the filing deadline for anyone seeking election this year to the NABJ Board of Directors.

The Elections Committee urges all members to consider seeking an office on the 14-member Board -- and then to declare their candidacies by Friday – and, yes, to vote in this year's elections, culminating on Friday, Aug. 10, for the 2007-2009 term.

Full members may vote for and seek the offices of president, vice president-print, vice president-broadcast, secretary, treasurer, parliamentarian and regional director. Associate and student members may do the same for their representatives.

Saturday, July 1, is the deadline for current or lapsed full, associate and student members to renew, or for first-time members to join in hopes of voting in this year's election via mail-in balloting before the convention in Las Vegas; via electronic balloting before and during the convention, and or on Election Day at the convention.

Eligible members can also cast their ballots electronically via the NABJ Web site from Friday, June 8 to Election Day, Friday, Aug. 10.

Lisa Thomas-Laury of 6ABC is the featured speaker for Milestones. Thomas-Laury will share the highs and lows of her longstanding broadcast career, which spans nearly three decades, and provide attendees with insight on how to achieve success in the competitive field of communications.

The event will be emceed by the longtime talk-radio host Thera Martin Connelly.

“Milestones is our signature Women’s History Month event,” says Dawn Jones, president of PBPRS. “This much anticipated event allows us to acknowledge African American women who have made outstanding contributions to the industry and paved the way for future generations in this rewarding field.”

The Milestones event was designed to motivate, encourage and educate professionals and students in all aspects of the communications industry. Professionals in various communications positions throughout the tri-state area, including public relations, internal communications, marketing, government relations, broadcast journalism, etc., will be in attendance.

“We are very pleased to have Lisa Thomas-Laury as our special guest for this year’s celebration,” says Jones.

Attendees will have an opportunity to engage in an informative Q&A session with Lisa Thomas-Laury and to gain practical advice and tips for succeeding in the communications field through networking with the other dynamic industry professionals who will be in attendance.

This event is free for PBPRS members and $5 for students with a valid school ID. Non-members will be charged $15 for admission, with all proceeds going towards the PBPRS scholarship fund to support future communications professionals.

NABJ has appointed Caleb Wilkerson, a PABJ member and Producer at NFL Films as NABJ Region 1 Director.

Caleb replaces outgoing director Errol Cockfield, who has left the journalism industry. Wilkerson will be responsible for coordinating NABJ Regional activities, and promises to attend his fair share of PABJ events.

The Father of PABJ Immediate Past President Keith Herbert passed last week. Our thoughts and condolences are with the Herbert family in this trying time.

Smith Herbert Jr.

Smith Herbert Jr., a retired steelworker from Plymouth Meeting, died Friday, Feb.9, 2007 at Montgomery Hospital following complications from diabetes. He was 75.
Mr. Herbert retired from Superior Tube Company in Collegeville in 2005. He also worked for the former National Forge Company in Philadelphia. For 22 years, Mr. Herbert worked for the former Allen Wood Steel Company in Plymouth Township.
He was an avid reader and played chess as a hobby.
Born in Norristown, Mr. Herbert was the son of Smith Sr. and Mildred Coleman Herbert. He grew up in the Ivy Rock and Black Horse sections of Plymouth Township, and in Bridgeport, before moving to Rahway Avenue in East Norriton. Mr. Herbert graduated from Norristown High School.
Mr. Herbert’s wife of 55 years, Ella Mae (Griffin) Herbert, died on Dec. 7, 2006. Surviving are seven children; Darlene Carter, wife of Billy Carter, of Norristown; Loretta Culbreath, wife of Harry Culbreath, of East Norriton; Dwight W. Herbert, husband of Eulyn, of Gilbertsville; Brian Herbert, of Collegeville; Kenith D. Herbert, husband of Paula, of Libertyville, Ill.; Tyrone K. Herbert, husband of Cindy Aaron, of Kansas City, Mo.; and Keith D. Herbert, of King of Prussia; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Louise White, wife of Harrison, of Worcester and a brother, Dwayne C. Herbert, of East Norriton.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jessie, and a sister, Catherine Farrell.
Mr. Herbert was cremated. A memorial service will be held Friday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. at the Richard C. Johnson Funeral Home, 800 W. Main St., and Norristown.
Donations can be made to Montgomery Homecare and Hospice, 25 W. Fornance St., Norristown, Pa., 19401.

Black Journalists Recalled at Inky!

Breaking News from Richard Prince:

At least nine newsroom employees on the Philadelphia Inquirer's layoff list — including two African American journalists — are said to be coming back to work at the paper after renewed negotiations between management and the Newspaper Guild...

Diane Mastrull, a development writer who is chair of the Guild's bargaining committee, identified the two black journalists as NBA beat writer and columnist David Aldridge and photo editor Donna Hendricks. However, neither could be reached and an Inquirer colleague, who did not want to be named, told Journal-isms that Aldridge had not made up his mind about returning. Aldridge also does commentary for the TNT Network.

Others who were called back included reporters Thomas Fitzgerald and Jeff Shields, and photo editors Cheryl Shugars, Glen Alen Malott and Jay Gorodetzer, part of a department that was particularly hard-hit. The layoffs of editorial assistants Sherelle McZeal and Rob Copestick were also reversed, Mastrull said. McZeal is African American.

Diversity Observations

January 16, 2007

African American (11.3 percent), Asian American (4.7 percent) and Hispanic American (2.1 percent) journalists are the minorities represented on The Inquirer’s newsroom staff, according to the latest survey of the American Society of Newspaper editors.

African American (16) and Asian American (5) journalists represent a disproportionate share (30 percent) of the newsroom staff identified to be laid off by The Inquirer.

Philadelphia’s population is 45 percent African American, 5 percent Asian and 10

percent Hispanic, according to U.S. Census figures, meaning that even before the layoffs, The Inquirer newsroom staff was a poor reflection of the community it covers.

Inadequate consideration was given to diversity not only in naming those to be laid off, but in subsequently carving out specific newsroom jobs to be protected from the layoffs.(For example, immigration is one of the hottest topics in the nation, yet The Inquirer’s immigration reporter, an Asian American, was laid off.)

The Inquirer City Desk has only one black reporter and no black editors as it prepares to cover a mayoral election in which race will be an important factor.

The lack of diversity on The Inquirer Copy Desk puts it at a dangerous disadvantage in sighting cultural and ethnic slights before they get into the paper.

The lack of diversity within The Inquirer Features Department puts it at a disadvantage in sighting cultural trends in music, dance, the theater, etc., within the Philadelphia region.

The lack of diversity among The Inquirer’s assigning editors puts the paper at a

disadvantage in deciding which stories are most important to our readers.

The lack of diversity among The Inquirer’s regular columnists presents a monolithic point of view on sundry issues, suggesting to minority readers that the paper doesn’t really care about what they think. The low number of Hispanics in the newsroom echoes this concern.

With previous job actions at The Inquirer having decimated its number of more seasoned minority journalists, current layoffs that have targeted junior staffers have destroyed hopes for a new generation to grow and become the paper’s future leaders.

The carving out of “important” beats for protection from layoffs has revealed The

Inquirer’s failure to assign minority journalists to key beats. New hires of minority

journalists at entry-level positions will only perpetuate that condition.

The Inquirer lacks programs aimed at retention of veteran minority journalists.

The Inquirer lacks an active recruitment effort, complete with director and staff, which can identify qualified minority journalists at various levels of experience who might be hired at any time in the future.

The Inquirer has failed to continue operation of a diversity committee of staff, including top editors, which would concern itself with the ethnic makeup of the newsroom staff as well as coverage of our minority communities.

The Inquirer has failed to continue even infrequent content analyses of its pages to ensure that our stories and photographs properly reflect the diversity of our readers.

Both Inquirer publisher Brian P. Tierney and executive editor Bill Marimow are to be commended for their stated commitments to diversity, which must now be borne out by their actions.

Any finger-pointing at the Newspaper Guild for the impact of layoffs and carve-outs does not excuse The Inquirer for not taking additional steps available to it to ensure that the diversity of its staff was better protected.

The involvement of both the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists and the

National Association of Black Journalists is indicative of the rest of America’s interest in how The Inquirer handles these diversity issues.

The lack of coverage by The Inquirer of these diversity issues, given its previous

coverage of other workplace issues, suggests to readers that The Inquirer is trying to hide from the subject rather than take positive action.

Considering these observations, minority journalists at The Inquirer collectively request that positive action be taken now, with the immediate object being to reduce the number of minority journalists included in the current list of those to be laid off. Thank you.

Greetings: The following is a recap of the meeting held Jan. 16 with Philadelphia Inquirer company executives regarding diversity. The following persons attended:Brian P. Tierney (Inquirer/Daily News Publisher), Bill Marimow (Inquirer Executive Editor), Michael Days(Daily News Executive Editor), Mark Frisby (LaborRelations), Robert Barron (General Counsel), and Inquirer staffers Melanie Burney, Sandy Clark, Vernon Clark, Sarah Glover, Annette John-Hall, Harold Jackson, Dwight Ott, Acel Moore and Elisa Ung.

The discussion centered around diversity, coverage and staffing, carve-outs/seniority, hiring and retention, and the future. The meeting lasted about 90 minutes.The staff presented a document consisting of diversity observations at the paper. It was signed by 27 staffers. The staff made the following recommendations:
1) to re-establish a Diversity Committee
2) to develop a company mission statement on diversity
3) to reinstitute recruitment officer position
4) to conduct periodic content analysis of thenewspaper
5) provide training
6) enhance internship programs to include moreminorities
7) to continue community outreach with various segments of the community

At the end of the meeting, the company agreed:
1) to create a Diversity Committee to develop company-wide policies for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News
2) to name someone within a week to oversee theDiversity Committee
3) to make efforts to call back minority staffers if positions become available
4) to meet again in one month to dialogue further.

A news conference was held afterward in the PublicRoom.
